The Scottish Draughts Association.

The world's first draughts association, the S.D.A. came into being as a result of the games' resounding popularity as a "mind" recreation in Scotland.

Draughts board

Draughts was, and is, studied and played by people from all walks of life and varied educational and occupational backgrounds.

Scotland, down the centuries, has produced many of of the worlds finest players, including James Wyllie - The Herd Laddie - some of whose innovative play still stands today - 150 years later - without correction or improvement. Wyllie is also credited with taking the game to America.

Many of the games most informative writers originated in Scotland:

Anderson, Robertson, H.F Shearer of Dundee and J. Lees of Paisley, all produced popular and treasured 'Guides' to our game.

Similarly, most of the opening moves of the '2 move' era and earlier, were originated and developed by intensive play and analysis by players from the cities and smaller communities. Glasgow, Dundee, Paisley, Edinburgh, have strategic formations named after them as a result, as did Kelso, Fife, Denny and many other places.
